OpenAI Collaborates with Metropolitan Museum of Art for Interactive AI Installation
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has always been a hub of creativity and innovation, but their latest collaboration with OpenAI takes things to a whole new level. The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, features an interactive AI installation that brings the glamour and sophistication of 1930s New York to life.
In this project, OpenAI has developed a bespoke chat experience inspired by Natalie Potter, an early twentieth-century New York socialite. Visitors to the exhibition can interact with an AI version of Potter, learning more about her life, her wedding, and the time period in which she lived. They can even see her stunning 1931 wedding gown up close.

To create this unique experience, OpenAI worked closely with the Met’s digital team to gather historical documents, letters, and newspaper articles. Using their most advanced language model and bespoke instructions based on these sources, they developed a personalized chat experience that truly reflects Potter’s character and the era in which she lived.
The result is an AI experience that not only enriches understanding and respects historical content but also encourages visitors to actively engage with the display. The “Chat with Natalie” experience follows the same safety protocols as ChatGPT, ensuring secure and appropriate interactions for all visitors.
